New Comics Wednesday - Silk Spectre I / The Watchmen

Last Saturday I went to WonderCon in Anaheim, and feel it’s fitting to start the first installment of New Comics Wednesday this week! I’m inspired by the cosplayers of the con, and decided to write about my own favorite comic heroine, Sally Jupiter (also known as Silk Spectre I) from The Watchmen.

I admit that I adore the styling of Sally Jupiter in the movie over the comic. The costume designer did a phenomenal job styling her as a 1940s pinup, with her costume inspired by vintage lingerie. She’s sexy, kicks ass (literally), and fights crime, all while sporting victory rolls. What’s not to love?

Besides her stunning style, her character plays a pivotal role in the story. She offers a complex female point of view in a heavily male oriented environment. Under the glitz and glamour of her hero status and adoration of men everywhere, she is a complicated and deeply troubled character. If you’re a fan of dark superhero movies like The Dark Knight, Kick-Ass, and Sin City, you’ll love the comic and movie.

Want to achieve your own Sally Jupiter look? If you want to channel your inner pinup heroine, check out Holly Messinger’s amazing Silk Spectre costume (she made the one yours truly wore at last year’s Comic Con). If you’re looking to do a not-so-literal version of Silk Spectre, here are some vintage and easy to wear options that are just as gorgeous.

Pair the dress with black kitten pumps and rhinestone jewelry, and voila, you’re ready to fight crime hit the town!

Shopping Diary - March Edition (with pictures!)

So I’ve been told that I’m a shopping addict expert, so I figured I should spread the love about my favorite haunts. I rarely purchase anything at full price, so I’m always on the hunt for a good sale (and who doesn’t love sales?).

I record most of my retail exploits on the Instagrams, but I love the idea of having a monthly shopping diary where I can spread the love and write mini-reviews.

H&M’s Conscious Partywear Collection

Not even a few days after Kate Young for Target’s look book was released, H&M released theirs for this Spring’s Conscious Collection.

You might remember last year’s Red Carpet collection, full of Oscar worthy pieces worn by actresses Michelle Williams and Amanda Seyfriend, to name a few. This year they’re ditching the Red Carpet and keeping it to the point: parties.

I am floored by how gorgeous these dresses are. They are clearly inspired by the glamour of old Hollywood, but the haute couture you would see on a Paris runway.

Because the fashion gods are clearly against me, now we have two fabulous evening wear collections debuting in April, so now I must bide my wallet and battle myself with which items are going to win out.

New Comics Wednesday - An Introduction

Can you believe it’s been over a year and a half that I’ve been writing Tongue in Cheeky? This started as a little project where I could post about my favorite beauty products and fashion, which has evolved into a deep appreciation of my personal vintage inspired style.

As I wrote post after post, I knew something was missing: my voice. You guys know me as Ann, the Target addict, vintage lover, and mint green adorer. Thanks to a friend and Dean Street Society’s seminar about finding my niche, I had an “a-ha” moment - I didn’t incorporate one of my biggest passions: being a nerd. And I mean this in the truest sense. I have a cosmic tattoo inspired by The Jetsons and Futurama, and another tattoo inspired by my favorite video game, Portal. I spent the last 6 years of my life working in the video game industry, and I have been to San Diego Comic Con every year since 2005. But for some reason, I didn’t talk about it here.

I kept my love for fashion separate from games and comics, because I didn’t think they mixed, and surely, you guys wouldn’t want to read about it, right? In a subculture plagued by the stereotype of socially awkward and terribly dressed dudes, how does a vintage loving, Louboutin-wearing gal get tangled up in this? So my mission, starting today, is to dispel the myth that all nerds are unfashionable.

So I proudly present to you, a new segment that I’ve affectionately named, “New Comics Wednesday” (disclaimer: I may deviate from comics from time to time, to talk about other nerd things that are near and dear to my heart). My goal is to cover my favorite fashion found in comics, video games, cartoons, and whatever else strikes my fancy.

Collaboration Alert: Kate Young for Target

With Prabal Gurung for Target not even off the racks, Target has released the look book for their next collaboration with celebrity stylist Kate Young, which will hit stores on April 14th. She has styled the likes of Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman, and is taking a stab at designing for the first time.

Just in time for prom wedding season, the collection is chock full of pieces that are perfect for your next special event. As I was a bit underwhelmed by the Prabal collab, I’m happy to see some items that are right up my alley.

So enough of my yapping, here’s a sneak peek of some of my favorites! Prices range from $29.99 to $89.99, so there’s something for everyone’s budget.

I am in love with the clutches, the shape and the starburst pendant is perfectly vintage, and the colors are amazing.

To Warby, with Love

This weekend I made the trek up to West Hollywood to check out Warby Parker’s Class Trip. It’s an awesomely decked out school bus, loaded up with their classic frames.

If you haven’t heard of Warby Parker, here’s the Reader’s Digest version: Warby Parker sells prescription glasses and sunglasses. You can primarily purchase their styles online, with glasses as low as $95 (yes, that includes the prescription!). They’re able to keep their prices low due to small overhead and keeping the majority of their business online. Lastly, they also “Do Good”: the “Buy a Pair, Give a Pair” program means that every pair of Warby glasses you buy, they provide a pair to someone in need (just think of TOMS shoes and you’re on the right track).

I’ve been needing a new pair of glasses, and after hearing Neil Blumenthal (their co-founder) speak at IFBCon, I knew I had to check them out in person. And lucky for me, the next stop after San Diego was LA.

After the hellish drive that is the 5 Freeway, I came upon the bus. WP is truly a benevolent company, because I was able to drive in and park in the lot, instead of having to search for street parking (thank you Based God!).

I step onto the bus, and it’s like I’ve arrived at the holy grail of hipster-dom. Custom outfitted with wooden shelves that have every frame and color on display, and with mirrors strategically placed around the bus to check yourself out. It’s like stepping into a mobile glasses library.

I tried on frame after frame, and something felt off…I hadn’t found the “one”. I become discouraged; and then I see them, almost as if a sign from the hipster gods themselves, the Sinclair. Classic lines and comes in 3 colors, I knew I found my mate.

If you’re prepared and bring your prescription with you, they can fulfill your order right there (in your face LensCrafters!). If you’re like me, and have been putting off your eye exam, you can also use your visit as a showroom to try on the styles without having any unpleasant surprises by ordering online.

I haven’t purchased my glasses yet, but as soon as I make my way to the optometrist, you better believe those Sinclairs will be mine!
